Member Spotlight - Tyler "Wolf" Mayberry

Many athletes have walked through that rickety old garage door at CrossFit James Island, but none quite as unique as Tyler "Wolf" Mayberry. A former collegiate athlete, rock climber, and all-around thrill seeker in his spare time, Wolf decided to try something different when he started CrossFit back in the Fall of 2016. Since starting, Wolf consistently can be seen at the 6:30 am class wearing brightly colored unicorn shirts and socks, asking "Is this a day for my special shoes?", or dropping Jocko knowledge on everyone. His personality, sense of humor, and positive attitude have created an exciting and fun environment in the "Dirty 630", but his willingness to make himself better each day, along with his encouragement he brings to every member whether it is their first day or 400th day, is what landed him as this months member spotlight. Nice work Wolf. Now get back to work.

So, let’s start by talking about your self-proclaimed nickname — Wolf. Did you legally change that yet?

Legally no, there are several forms. In aggressive capacity, yes.

You are an adventure guy and former collegiate athlete. Talk about your previous experiences in weightlifting? Have you ever done anything like CrossFit before starting?

Most lifting was limited to classic three days per week bullshit that quickly becomes monotonous. On the collegiate level there was much more by way of running cross training and more focus on some Olympic movements. This was limited mostly to squat exercises.

What initially got you in the doors at CFJI? What keeps you coming back?

I needed a change from rock climbing, which I was doing at the time. There are very few rocks here. Geographically the area is not great for it. Initially I looked up the few gyms close to mi casa and then judged them on their websites and coach profiles. No heat or a/c would have sealed the deal, should be advertised. Discipline and a desire to achieve keep me coming back. Not going to insert the go to “community and new friends and positive vibes” comment you are reaching for.

I’m going to throw this one out there — Who is your favorite coach at CFJI?

Jenna.

What are 1-2 of your goals at CFJI for 2017?

50 DU with Consistency. 185# Snatch

What are your favorite things to do when you are not at the gym?

Read books, travel to exotic locations.

Favorite Lift?

Power Clean

Least Favorite Lift?

Snatch

Least Favorite Gymnastics Movement?

Pistol while cold.

Favorite "Girl" WOD?

Amanda, because she injured me.

Least Favorite?

Same answer as above, I like the named workouts, they’re usually quite challenging.

Hometown?

Portland, ME.

Favorite Charleston Restaurant?

I like the duck at the Moose.

If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be?

Squirrel Suiter, Shark cage feeder, (Double answer, squirrel suit to boat feeding angry sharks.)

What would you most like to tell yourself at age 13?

Don’t worry about pleasing others.

What is the best book you have ever read?

Difficult question, limited to one I’ll say "The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston was a very impactful book at the time I read it, which was around age 12. It’s about an ebola outbreak. Best book depends on my mind at the time I’m being asked.

A penguin walks through that door right now wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he here?

First of all Penguins waddle. “Get me a Modelo.” He's there in search of small rocks to polish with his feet.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet?

Thomas Jefferson.

If the CFJI coaches came to your house for dinner, what would you prepare?

Steak and asparagus, sweet potato fries. Simple, gets it done.

Is it wrong for a vegetarian to eat animal crackers?

No. This question Is too PC for my liking. Animal crackers are best eaten head only then staring at the cracker sans (without) head then consuming the rest of the body, which is never as satisfying as crunching the head.

Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle?

I’m not much of the glue expert, but the answer is science Alex.

Why are there no 'B' batteries?

Are there not? Probably are just less common for practical application.

One thing about me people would be surprised to know?

Well I’m not sure I know you well enough to answer that. If you meant it to be about me then I would like to become an ironsmith and have a ranch in the southwest upon retirement.
